We have carried out a thorough check of our hosted services and are pleased to report that we have found no evidence of any of our systems using Log4j2 version 2.x (the affected version).

Issues with connecting to the shared SQL Servers have been resolved.  This fault was caused by 'out of schedule' Microsoft Windows Update reboots.  We have implemented preventative measures to stop this problem from re-occurring in the short term future and are planning to make changes to the configuration to further improve the reliability in the near future.  Sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused.

Service is now fully restored and all VMs are available again.  This interruption was caused by an issue with our cluster updating process and is now resolved.  The cluster is now stable.

Once again we are sorry for any inconvenience caused and will look into the root cause analysis and put steps in place to try to ensure this does not re-occur.

During this time, all access to the FTPS service will be unavailable.

Our network provider is investigating some recent "network abnormality".  We witnessed connectivity to our hosting solution being interrupted for a few minutes in the last hour.

Impact upon uptime is expected:

This will affect live/public services with several anticipated actual network disruptions of 1-3 minutes. The impact could be up to 25 minutes at any one time during the maintenance window. Where poor network performance and outages may be experienced.

Some BT and Vodafone customers, including customers ISPs who may use those networks for their outbound routing, may have experienced some brief connectivity issues to our services this morning.

This problem is outside of the ESDM datacentre or infrastructure and is being resolved by BT on a geographical basis.  We will continue to monitor in case of further issues.

The work will be carried out over the weekend of 9th-10th March 2019. The aim is to keep disruption to a minimum and servers will be live for the majority of the time, but there will be periods when all servers have to be switched off in order to upgrade the hardware. 

We hope to have all the work completed on the Saturday, but have extended the "at risk" period to include Sunday as a precautionary measure. 

The "at risk" period will therefore extend from 09.00am Saturday 9th March through to 23:59pm Sunday 10th March. Servers may go offline at any time through this period of planned maintenance.

The server (and its various VMs) maybe slightly sluggish for teh next 30-60 mins as everything settles down.

For some reason this failed and the server stalled.  We have now managed to get the server to restart correctly and it is currently starting up applying updates (23% and progressing slowly).

Assuming this completes successfully it will then take a few additional minutes for the individual VMs to restart.

We are endeavouring to deal with the vulnerabilities as quickly as possible, but in a controlled fashion with minimal impact to our clients.

We have been applying and will continue to apply software and operating system updates when they are released by Microsoft and/or our Anti-Virus suppliers.

We will apply any BIOS and firmware patches soon after they are released by the hardware suppliers. However, as these primarily affect our core servers which host multiple client virtual machines, this requires careful planning to minimise the impact and risk to our clients. We will announce any significant planned maintenance periods by direct email and through this page.

Clients may be aware that the mitigation measures required to address this vulnerability are likely to impact on performance by between 5% and 30%. Please do let us know if you feel any impact. It is possible that some systems may require increased CPU/memory allocations to achieve acceptable performance for end users.

The maintenance work will include adding some additional resources to the server and updating the BIOS to include the recent fixes for the Meltdown/SPECTRE vulnerabilities.
